Find contact using GST number printed on a bill when a purchase goes wrong and the shop is hard to reach. Perhaps an appliance stopped working within warranty, a piece of furniture arrived damaged, a refund was promised and never came, or the shop has moved and its old number no longer answers. If the bill is a GST tax invoice, it carries the seller’s GSTIN, and that number is your link to the seller’s verified identity and registered address, which is the starting point for getting your complaint heard.
This guide is written for consumers rather than businesses. It explains what a GST bill must show, how to use the GSTIN to confirm who sold to you and where they are, how to reach them, and which official channels help when a seller ignores you. It also covers a related question many people ask: whether the shop was entitled to charge GST in the first place.
A tax invoice issued by a GST-registered seller must carry the seller’s name, address and GSTIN, an invoice number and date, a description of the goods or services, the value and the tax charged. Many also show a phone number, but not all, and a printed number can go out of date if the shop moves.
If your bill has no GSTIN but charges GST, or the GSTIN does not exist when you search it, that is a problem in itself and worth raising, because tax should only be collected by registered sellers using a valid number.

Enter the GSTIN from your bill in the public taxpayer search on the official GST portal. The result shows the seller’s legal name, which for a sole proprietor is the owner’s own name, the trade name the shop uses, its status, and its principal and additional places of business. If the shop has several branches registered in the state, they may appear as additional places.
Check that the trade name matches the shop you bought from. If the registration is cancelled, note the cancellation date; a shop that has closed may still be reachable through its owner, but you will need to act promptly.
Search the trade name together with the area or pincode from the GST record. Shops often have map listings at their address showing a current phone number, and many have social media pages or websites. If the shop belongs to a brand or franchise, the brand’s own customer care may also help with warranty matters.
If the shop is local and you can get there, a visit with your bill and the faulty item is often the quickest way to a resolution. Shop staff usually respond better to a customer at the counter than to calls.

If calls and visits do not resolve the issue, write to the seller. Address the letter or email to the legal name and the registered address from the GST record. State what you bought, the invoice number and date, what went wrong, what you have already tried and what you want: a repair, replacement or refund. Give a reasonable deadline and keep a copy.
A written complaint creates a record, which you will need if you escalate.

If the seller does not respond or refuses a fair remedy, India’s National Consumer Helpline, run under the Department of Consumer Affairs, accepts grievances by phone on 1915, through its website and through its mobile app. It works with businesses to resolve complaints before they go to formal proceedings. Have your bill, the GSTIN, the seller’s details and your written complaint ready.
For complaints that remain unresolved, consumer commissions at district, state and national level hear cases under the Consumer Protection Act, with the level depending on the value involved. Complaints can be filed online through the official e-filing portal for consumer cases. The seller’s verified legal name and registered address from the GST record are exactly what a complaint needs to identify the opposite party correctly. For larger amounts, consider professional advice.

Small businesses that opt for the composition scheme pay tax at a flat rate on their turnover and are not allowed to collect GST from customers on their bills. Their bills should say that they are composition taxable persons not eligible to collect tax. If the public search shows the seller is a composition taxpayer but your bill added GST, you can raise this with the seller and, if needed, through the GST grievance channels.
Equally, a shop whose registration was cancelled before your purchase should not have charged GST on your bill. The public search shows the effective date of any cancellation.
Keep the bill, the warranty card, photos of any defect, and copies of every message and letter. Note dates of calls and visits and the names of people you spoke to. Good records make every step of the process faster and strengthen your position if the matter goes further.
