Find phone number with GST number is a routine task for chartered accountants and tax practitioners, though rarely for its own sake. A client receives a scrutiny notice or an intimation that the input credit claimed is higher than what suppliers reported. The explanation usually sits with a counterparty: a supplier who filed late, reported the wrong GSTIN, or has since had the registration cancelled. Resolving the notice means reaching that counterparty, getting them to act or confirm, and showing the officer that you did.
This guide sets out a practitioner’s routine: which notices involve counterparties, where to find their contacts, what to ask them for, and how to document the attempt.
A scrutiny notice may point to differences between the client’s returns and the auto-drafted credit statement. An intimation of excess credit flags that credit claimed in the summary return is more than what suppliers reported. Liability mismatch intimations may involve a buyer disputing an invoice. Proceedings over invoices from a supplier whose registration was cancelled retrospectively question whether the supply was genuine. In each, the counterparty holds part of the answer.

The client’s purchase register, supplier invoices, purchase orders, payment records and email correspondence nearly always contain the supplier’s phone and the name of the person who handled the transaction. Ask the client’s purchase or accounts team for the contact they actually use; it is likely to work and the supplier will recognise the call.
Before calling, search the supplier’s GSTIN for status and filing history. If returns for the relevant period are missing, the fix is for the supplier to file. If they filed but the invoice is absent, the issue is probably a wrong GSTIN or an omitted invoice, which they can correct in a later period within the time allowed. If the registration is cancelled, the conversation turns to evidence that the supply was real.

Filing errors are fixed by whoever prepares the supplier’s returns, often their accountant or consultant. Ask the supplier’s sales contact to connect you with that person, and speak practitioner to practitioner where possible. Give the invoice numbers, dates, values and the period concerned so they can check quickly.

Ask for a specific action and a date: file the return for the period, report the missing invoice, or correct the recipient GSTIN. Where the supplier cannot or will not act, ask for a written confirmation of the supply, invoice and payment received. Even an email confirmation helps when you explain the position to the officer.
If the client’s records are exhausted, use the supplier’s published channels and the GST address. Send a letter by a trackable method to the principal place of business. Record every attempt with the date, number or address used and the outcome. Officers take a documented, reasonable effort into account, especially when supported by proof of payment through banking channels, transport documents and receipt records.

Combine the counterparty’s action or confirmation with the client’s own evidence: invoices, payment proof, e-way bills or delivery records, and stock entries. Explain the timeline clearly. Attach the contact log where the supplier did not respond, showing what was tried.
Encourage clients to keep a verified contact for the accounts person at each significant supplier, check supplier filing status before paying large invoices, and reconcile the credit statement monthly. Reaching a supplier the week after a mismatch appears is far easier than a year later when a notice arrives.
