Find contact number by GSTN is what many people try first, reasoning that the network running the GST system must know every taxpayer’s phone number. It does: every registration has a mobile number and email verified by one-time passwords. But those details are held for the tax system, not for other taxpayers, and neither the portal, the helpdesk nor tax officers will hand them out because you asked. Understanding exactly where that wall stands saves time and points you to the channels that actually work.
This guide explains what contact information the GST system holds, why it stays private, what the helpdesk and grievance channels can help with, how the system’s own invoice and return features let you signal a counterparty without knowing their number, and where to turn for an actual phone number.
When a business registers, it provides contact details for the principal place of business and for its authorised signatory, including a mobile number and email address verified by one-time passwords. These details are used for logging in, filing returns with verification codes, receiving notices and other official communication.
The public taxpayer search draws on the same registration but shows only selected fields: names, constitution, taxpayer type, status, dates, addresses, business activities and filing history. The contact fields are deliberately left out.

Registration contact details often belong to individuals: the proprietor, a partner or an authorised signatory who may be an employee or an outside professional. Publishing them would expose those people to unsolicited calls and to fraud attempts by anyone holding a GSTIN, which appears on every invoice. Keeping them private protects taxpayers and keeps the official channel trustworthy.
For the same reason, be wary of any website or caller claiming to supply the mobile registered on someone’s GSTIN. Such offers are either guesses presented as fact or misuse of data that should not have left the system.
The GST helpdesk and grievance channels exist to help taxpayers with their own registration, login, filing and payment problems, and to receive complaints about portal issues. They can help you if you cannot access your own account, if a return will not file, or if you believe your PAN has been misused to take a registration you never applied for.
They cannot look up another taxpayer’s contact details for you, pass messages between businesses or intervene in commercial disputes such as unpaid invoices. Asking them to do so wastes time on both sides.

Although you cannot get a counterparty’s number from the system, some system features carry a signal to them. When a supplier reports an invoice to you, it appears in your input credit statements. Through the invoice management facility on the portal, recipients can accept, reject or keep pending the invoices suppliers have reported, and those actions are visible to the supplier, which prompts them to correct mistakes.
Similarly, an invoice you issue and report correctly appears in your buyer’s statements, which often prompts their accounts team to contact you if something is wrong. These are not a substitute for a phone call, but they are a legitimate, system-supported way to put a discrepancy in front of the other business.

A real phone number for a business comes from the business itself or from sources tied to it: its invoices and letterhead, its website, your past emails and ledgers, transport documents, business listings at its registered address, or a business contact data source matched to its GSTIN. For companies, the corporate registry adds an official email. The GST record’s addresses and names are what you use to check that any number you find belongs to the right business.
If a dispute is serious, such as a large unpaid amount, a formal letter to the business’s registered principal place of business is legitimate and reaches the address the business itself declared. For legal proceedings, the authorities and courts have their own procedures for obtaining information, which run through due process rather than requests to the helpdesk. Take professional advice before going down that road.

A common scenario: a buyer notices that a supplier’s invoice is missing from its credit statement, searches the supplier’s GSTIN, finds no phone number, and raises a ticket asking the helpdesk to contact the supplier. The ticket is closed without action, a week is lost and the filing deadline comes closer.
The better route takes minutes. The buyer’s accounts team checks its purchase records for the supplier’s invoice letterhead and the email that delivered the invoice, calls or writes to that contact, and at the same time marks the invoice as pending in the portal so the supplier sees the issue in its own system. The helpdesk is never needed, because the contact was in the buyer’s own files all along.
The same privacy works in your favour. Keep your own registered mobile and email current, make sure they belong to people who will stay with the business, and never share one-time passwords with anyone claiming to call from the tax department or a counterparty. Genuine officials do not ask for them.
