Find GST holder phone number searches usually assume a business with a permanent shop or office. Some GSTINs belong to holders who are only in a state for a short time. A trader from another state who sells at a trade fair, a handicraft seller at a seasonal exhibition, or a foreign company supplying goods at an event in India may take a temporary registration that lasts for the period of the business and then lapses. Contacting such a holder after the event takes a different approach, because the address on record may be a stall that no longer exists.

This guide explains what casual and non-resident registrations are, how to recognise them, and how to find a working phone number for the holder once the event is over.

Quick answer

  • Casual taxable persons register temporarily in a state where they have no fixed place of business.
  • Non-resident taxable persons are foreign suppliers with no fixed place of business in India.
  • Both registrations are time-limited and tied to a specific period of business.
  • The address on record may be an exhibition venue, not an office.
  • Event organisers, the holder’s home registration or the Indian signatory are the best routes.

What a Casual Registration Is

A casual taxable person makes occasional taxable supplies in a state or union territory where they do not have a fixed place of business. Typical examples are exhibitors at trade fairs, sellers at seasonal melas and contractors doing a short job in another state. They apply for registration before starting, deposit tax in advance based on estimated turnover, and the registration is valid for a limited period, usually up to ninety days, which can be extended.

Many casual registrants have a regular GST registration in their home state under the same PAN. That home registration is the key to reaching them later.

What a Non-Resident Registration Is

A non-resident taxable person is someone outside India who occasionally makes taxable supplies in India, for example a foreign manufacturer selling at an Indian exhibition. They must apply through an authorised signatory who is resident in India and holds a valid PAN, and the registration is likewise limited to a set period with an advance deposit.

The Indian authorised signatory, often a customs or tax agent, is therefore a natural point of contact.

Key pointA temporary GSTIN rarely leads to a permanent office. Look for the holder's home registration, the event organiser or the Indian representative.

Recognising a Temporary Registration

The public search shows the taxpayer type and the period of validity. A casual or non-resident type, a short validity window and an address at an exhibition ground or hotel are strong clues. If the status already shows the registration as expired or cancelled at the end of its period, that is normal for these holders and not a sign of fraud.

Using the Home Registration

For a casual taxable person, the ten characters after the state code in the GSTIN are the PAN. Search the PAN in the public search to list all registrations under it. The regular registration in the home state will show the business’s permanent address and trade name, and that business will have a public footprint you can search for a phone number in the usual way.

Event Organisers

If you met the holder at a fair or exhibition, the organiser’s exhibitor list is valuable. It usually shows the company name, stall number, city, and often a phone and email that the exhibitor supplied. Organisers may also forward a message to an exhibitor on request.

The Indian Representative of a Foreign Supplier

For a non-resident taxable person, ask the event organiser or your own contacts for the Indian agent who handled their registration. The agent will not hand over private numbers, but can pass on your message or confirm the supplier’s official contact. Overseas companies usually have websites with international numbers and email; match the company name with the legal name on the GST record.

Invoices and Credit After the Event

If you bought from a temporary registrant, keep the tax invoice: their GSTIN for that period is valid even after it lapses, provided they filed returns. If an invoice does not appear in your credit statement, contact the holder through their home business or agent promptly, since these registrations are closed soon after the event.

Recording the Contact Properly

Save the temporary GSTIN together with the home GSTIN or overseas company details, the event name and date, and the phone number you confirmed. Without the link to the permanent business, the record becomes useless the moment the temporary registration lapses.
