GST B2B business lookup is a core step for any platform that onboards businesses: online marketplaces, wholesale apps, logistics networks, payment aggregators and procurement portals. Each new seller or partner gives a GSTIN, and the platform must check that the business is real, that the person signing up represents it, and that its tax details are correct for invoicing and tax collection. This is know-your-business, or KYB, and the GSTIN is its anchor.
This guide sets out a practical KYB flow built around the GST lookup: what to verify, how to match identities, how to collect contacts, and how to keep the data fresh after onboarding.
Platforms are responsible for who trades on them. Fake sellers, borrowed GSTINs and shell businesses lead to fraud, counterfeit goods, chargebacks and tax problems. E-commerce operators also collect tax at source on sellers’ supplies, which requires correct GST details for every seller. A solid KYB flow protects buyers, honest sellers and the platform itself.

Validate the format and check digit as the seller types, then verify through an authorised data channel to fetch the legal name, trade name, constitution, status, registration date, principal place of business and activities. Reject cancelled and suspended registrations, and flag very recent ones for closer review.
Compare the GSTIN’s legal name with the applicant’s PAN, and the PAN inside the GSTIN with the PAN document submitted. For companies and LLPs, check the corporate registry and match the signatory to a director or partner, or require an authorisation letter. Validate the bank account holder’s name against the legal name before enabling payouts.

Ask the seller for a business mobile, a support email and, for larger sellers, an accounts contact. Verify the mobile and email with one-time passwords. These become the platform’s channels for orders, disputes and compliance notices, so they must be numbers the seller controls and has agreed you may use.
Compare the pickup address the seller enters with the places of business in the GST record. A pickup point that is not a registered place of business may be legitimate, such as a new warehouse not yet added, but should prompt a request to amend the registration. For high-risk categories, consider an address verification or video check.

After onboarding, recheck each seller’s GST status on a schedule and before large payouts. Watch for changes in legal name, constitution or address, and for cancellation. Ask sellers to update contacts through authenticated flows. Suspend selling when a registration is cancelled until the seller provides a valid one.

Store the verification responses with timestamps, documents submitted, match results and the reviewer’s decision for manual cases. When a buyer complaint, tax query or fraud investigation arises, this record shows what the platform checked and when.
Sellers want to start quickly. Automate the GSTIN lookup, PAN match and OTP verification so most applicants pass in minutes, and send only exceptions to manual review. A clear message about what is missing, such as a bank name mismatch, helps genuine sellers fix it themselves.
