Find vendor mobile number by GST number becomes a security task when an email arrives saying a vendor has changed banks. The message looks genuine, the invoice is real, the amount is right, and only the account number is new. This is one of the most common ways businesses lose money: a fraudster who has access to a vendor’s email, or who has made a look-alike address, redirects a payment. The defence is simple and cheap: before paying a changed account, call the vendor on a number you already trust, not one supplied in the request.

This guide explains how the fraud works, where a trustworthy number comes from, and how to build the call-back into your payment process.

Quick answer

  • Bank-change requests by email or chat are a classic fraud route.
  • Never use a phone number given in the same request.
  • Use a number from your vendor master, verified at onboarding, or from the vendor’s own published channels.
  • Confirm the change with a known person, then record who confirmed it.
  • Make the call-back a mandatory step before releasing any changed payment.

How the Fraud Works

Fraudsters gain access to a vendor’s mailbox or register a domain that differs by one letter. They watch real invoices, then send a polite message from what looks like the vendor’s accounts team: “We have moved our account; please pay the attached invoice to these new details.” Some attach a forged bank letter. Some include a phone number to “confirm”, answered by the fraudster.

Why the GSTIN Helps

The GSTIN on the invoice ties the request to a real business, which you can check in the public search. The legal name there should match the name on the new bank account. More importantly, your vendor master holds that GSTIN with contacts you verified when the vendor was onboarded. That record is your trusted source, independent of the suspicious message.

Key pointThe safe number is the one you already had before the request arrived. Anything inside the request may be controlled by the fraudster.

Where a Trusted Number Comes From

In order of preference: the accounts contact confirmed at onboarding in your vendor master; the office landline on the vendor’s website or letterhead; the salesperson or owner you deal with regularly. Check that the number has not itself been changed recently by a message. If your records are thin, find the vendor’s published office number using the trade name and address from the GST record.

Making the Call

Call the trusted number and ask for the person you normally deal with in accounts. Do not read out the new account details; ask them to tell you their new account number and bank. If they know nothing about a change, you have probably stopped a fraud. If they confirm, ask why it changed and request a letter on their letterhead signed by an authorised person.

Checks on the New Account

Many banking systems show the account holder’s name when you add a beneficiary. It should match the vendor’s legal name on the GST record. A personal name for a company vendor, or a name in a different state, is a red flag. Some banks also offer account validation services that confirm the name before you pay.

Building It Into the Process

Make the call-back mandatory for any change to a vendor’s bank details, however senior the requester. Record who called, which number was used, who confirmed, and when. Have a second person approve the change in the system. Hold the first payment to a changed account for a short period, or send a small test amount and confirm receipt by phone.

If You Suspect Fraud

Do not reply to the message. Tell the vendor through the trusted number that their email may be compromised. Report the attempt through the national cybercrime channels, and inform your bank. If a payment has already gone, contact your bank immediately; speed matters.

Training the Team

Accounts staff should know that urgency, secrecy and new bank details together are the classic pattern. Short, regular reminders and a clear rule that “no call-back means no payment” protect the company better than any software filter.
